Greg "The Beast" Gurenlian wins Inaugural MLL FOGO Award
August 12, 2014
The MLL regular season has come to and end and in tradition the league will announce individual awards for Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Goalie of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and MVP. This year a new category was added, in my opinion long overdue, The FOGO of the Year! All of the awards are based on a ballot method of deciding the winner but the FOGO was based on stats no votes just shear performance.
The winner of the MLL FOGO Award in 2014 was Greg Gurenlian of the New York Lizards! "The Beast" won 61.1% of his draws this year and has been instrumental in the Lizards success this year. Last year Greg set the MLL record for face-off win percentage with 64.1% and owns three of the top five performances in league history.
Ironically, The Beast does not like the term FOGO! The acronym FOGO stands for "Face off get off" which rubs "The Best" the wrong way, he believes the FOGO should be called a "face off athlete" because they should be more adept on the field playing both offensively and defensively. He has joined forces with the formidable duo of Chris Mattes and Jerry Ragonese, both great face off athletes themselves, to begin "The Face-off Academy." In the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships Mattes and Gurenlian ranked in 1 and 2 in the world tourney with winning percentages of 90% and 81% respectively. If you want to learn how to be an elite Face-off athlete check out The Face-off Academy!
