I'm excited about this 2016/2017 Boys swim season, the amount of talent in the state will make for a great State Open Meet showcasing a number of great races. Veteran Swimmers like Corey Gambardella of Bran/Guil, Oliver Rus of Fairfield Prep, Kieren Smith from Ridgefield, Dave May of NDWH and newcomers Richard Nolan of Prep, William Briand of Masuk and countless others should add to the intrigue
Coming out of the holidays we have seen some strong preseason swims by Preps Oliver Rus and Bran/Guil Gambardella neck and neck in the 100 Free 48.06 & 48.07 respectively. The 500 Free with Alfred Hanson from NDWH posting a 4:47.45 and 200 Free in 1:48.8 this early - NDWH swimmer Dave May's 52.76 in the 100 fly open some eyes around the state. Pomperaug Henry Hu showed why he is one of the favorites in the 100 back by posting a 54.10 in his first meet but Corey Gambardella has posted the fastest time with a 53.58.
The interesting part of the beginning of the season is relay swims, teams are jockeying around with combinations that will provide those big point values and of course bragging rights.
I am new to the game of covering CTSwim but not new to the sport, I have always believed this wonderfully individual sport makes for a great team sport. I do believe there should be a dual meet championship as well as the class championship - this would make each coach meet plan for an opponent rather than utilizing a regular line up! I also believe the state should change competition to tiers vs leagues - it would be great to see a Greenwich take on a Pomperaug or a NDWH take on a Ridgefield which would produce a dual Meet champion - the teams would then enter into the divisional champs and finally the Open.
